Portfolio Specifications

There is no final examination in Scientific Communication; your assessment for this course is based on a portfolio of written work.

Your portfolio should be stapled together at the top left-hand corner. The contents should be printed in 12 point, A4 format, using single spacing. The front cover should include the following information:

The portfolio should contain the following documents:

1. A paper on the issue of internet crime (20%). This should be written as a formal paper (see Lecture 6) of about 1500 words.
2. A scholarly review paper of the literature in the area of your project (25%). Again, this should be written as a paper (about 2000 words in length), and the target audience is a CS graduate, not necessarily a specialist in the area. At least six papers must be reviewed. Proper citation and referencing is crucial.
3. A research paper describing the experimental results you have obtained in testing an algorithm of your choice (25%), or the equivalent form of research paper in your area. This paper should be limited to about ten pages. Where appropriate, it should contain tables, graphs, or figures illustrating your results. In this case, the target audience is the academic community of computer scientists.
4. Reviews of two seminars from this semester (10%). This should be written as a formal paper (see Lecture 6) of about two pages. The target audience is a CS graduate.
5. A copy of your Curriculum Vitae (10%). The target audience is a future employer.
6. A print-out of the top level of your home page (the home page entry itself is worth 10%), and the URL of the page. Assessment will be based on the site as viewed on the web. The target audience is the world.

In preparing your portfolio, you can use any of the work you have completed this semester, including the incorporation of any comments from markers, as well as help and feedback from your colleagues. Your work will be judged with respect to the lecture notes I have given you; that is, marks will be deducted for poor typesetting, spelling and typographical errors, poor layout, poor citations and referencing, grammatical errors, ambiguities, inconsistencies, and general sloppiness. A clear logical structure is required for each document, and arguments must be well-made and supported by clear evidence.

Your portfolio is due at noon on Tuesday 10 June. Late submissions will incur a penalty.
