Assignment 1

Write a paper of about 1,500 words on the problem of Internet crime. You may either discuss the issue generically, or you may focus on one or more aspects of it. Include some discussion on both technical and non-technical solutions to the problem(s) you discuss. In particular, explain how some of the technical solutions work, and whether you believe technology will eventually overcome the problem.

Many resources on Internet crime can be found on the Internet(!): some good starting points are:

• The Internet crime complaint centre
• Internet fraud watch
• ScamWatch
• The Internet crime forum
• The Federal Bureau of Investigation
• The Metropolitan Police
• The Australian Federal Police

The above list will probably grow during the semester.

Provide references for any data and opinions that you quote in your paper. Internet references are adequate, if they are from reputable sites and organisations.

Papers are due by noon on Monday 24 March. Please email or hand-deliver your paper to the unit co-ordinator. You are required to submit both the finished paper and the LaTeX source.
